War Board Game

War was a board game created by Guy Debord, a French Marxist philosopher. It never sold very well due to its extremely challenging nature. RSG, a software company, has built a very nice software version. It is available for download free at the link above – they call the game Kriegspiel. Supposedly RSG is being sued by Debord’s estate eventhough there were no copyrights and RSG shares the game for free.

I am just learning the game and hope to hone my skills. Practice and I’ll challenge you.

According to USA Today, Barrow AK is the coldest city/town in the United States
This of course makes sense due to its location 320 miles north of the Arctic Circle border. Barrow is accessible only by Aircraft or a snow machine capable of long distances during the winter months. I hope to visit it. I will be in Deadhorse AK this summer which is close, but still oh so far away.

I go to court today to testify as a witness to the car accident I saw last month.  I don’t mind lending a hand, but it seems to me I’ve already done everything I can for this case. I spoke with two officers already and told both of them everything I know. But apparently that isn’t enough and now I have to take half a day off, drive to Newbury and take the stand. The document I received in the mail states: “WARNING TO WITNESS: Failure to appear in accordance with this summons may result in the issuance of a warrant for your arrest.”

Really? … Screw off. I hate our legal system.

On November 17 2006 I went to Asylum in DC and had the best hamburger I’ve ever tasted. Tonight I am craving another.

The porcupines have found our deer feed on the porch. I was nearly scared to death a couple nights ago when I went jogging around the corner right onto them! Tonight I was a bit more cautious and neither I nor the Porcupines were startled. After I snapped a few shots they started making clicking noises and their quills spiked up, I figured it was time to leave them be. There were 4 of them.

I am rereading The Good Life by Helen and Scott Nearing. It is an autobiographical account of a couples venture to create a self sufficient lifestyle in the mountains of Vermont. They left their life in New York City and settled in the country for twenty years. During that time they built their own shelters, grew their own food, and explored the breadth of human existence. I read it 5 or 6 years ago and really enjoyed it. The entire concept is extremely appealing to me.

“We had tried living in several cities, at home and abroad. In varying degrees we met the same obstacles to a simple, quiet life, -complexity, tension, strain, artificiality, and heavy overhead costs. These costs were payable only in cash, which had to be earned under conditions imposed upon one by the city, -for its benefit and advantage. Even if cash income had been of no concern to us, we were convinced that it was virtually impossible to counter city pressures and preserve physical health, mental balance and social sanity through long periods of city dwelling. After careful consideration we decided that we could live a saner, quieter, more worthwhile life in the country than in any urban or suburban center.” – Helen Nearing
